The conditions and experiences of the Soldiers on the day they went to battle at Gallipoli. (25 April 1915)
The terrain and weather conditions;
The Terrain in which the men went through included; The Beach (Silas), Scrubs and Muddy Forests (Private Roy Howard Denning mentions in his Diary “Digging trenches through forest. God give me back the day joined this blood sucking unit who are never satisfied.”)The Weather Conditions where harsh, The had to face the Heat which caused them to run out of water But also the Rain which made the ground wet and muddy giving them cold feet and also made it very cold for them at night, But for Silas the weather was beautiful in the Morning.
Their thoughts as they prepare for battle;
As Silas was preparing for battle, he thought about the weather, how beautiful it was in the morning but what will happen at night, he was thinking about resources like food, he was comforting himself by thinking that he ate well and even if they didn’t have food that night, he will be fine but he also though about the men around him, He was thinking about their future and how it will end, In his mind he said; “I wonder which of the men has been chosen by death” meaning that they will die for sure and then started thinking about their hope and how little it was. But for Denning, he was thinking about conditions and how hard it was to walk through the muddy terrain and about his wet cloths.
The difficulties they faced during the day.
Private Roy Howard Denning had faced a lot of challenges during the day. First he had to walk through the loose and muddy ground, he had to carry his heavy cloths(backpack and weapons) which had mud that clung to them(which had made it even heavier). He was very thirsty and had water but didn’t drink as he did not know when his next refill was. At night, he was very cold and wet; they had to sleep close together to get some warmth which still wasn’t enough. But for Silas, the first difficulty he faced was when he was approaching the battlefield, they were under fire by the enemy, later his mates and he got cold feet. He also faced minor difficulties like the heavy backpack (he fell and needed help to get back up because of the heavy backpack), they both also had to walk through the trenches with the dead lying around with the smell and diseases.
Effects on the noises and the war,
Silas. With constant gun fire and loud explosions, Silas was suffering from neurasthenia (the shell shock) he also got the enteric fever. He went to various hospitals like Australian General Hospital; he was later discharged from the AIF as medically unfit on 17 august 1916. On the field, he was terrified of the noises and described them as hell. He later says, the men there are going crazy after seeing all the dead bodies and he says to the situation was horrible and would question himself that if he will go mental too. Denning: He was wounded on June 16 and was sent to Malta to recuperate.
Personal Experiences, fears, thirst and hunger.
Denning; The main fear for Denning was for him to run out of water and die of thirst as he says “I was very thirsty, but dare not drink not knowing when I would get a fresh supply of water. Other things was where he slept, they were cold and had to sleep close to get some warmth, he ran out of food as he mentioned that the only food left was for the guns. Silas, He had to grow through a trench full of the dead, never knowing when he would catch a disease, carry the heavy bags as he fell and could have drowned, (it doesn’t mention about the hunger and thirst of Silas).
Relationships with other men.
They both seemed like they had good relations with the other men, they joked around trying to forget about the harsh war that’s on around them. They joked about how they had muddy cloths and how if they wife’s would see them like that and how they want to get the cold feet.
